Racemic MDMA elicits conditioned place preference

in rats (Marona-Lewicka et al., 1996)

Racemic MDMA decreases the threshold for rewarding

electrical stimulation of the brain in rats

(Hubner et al., 1987)

Racemic MDMA has twice been shown to act as a

reinforcer in intravenous self-administration

paradigms in primates (Beardsley et al., 1986;

Lamb and Griffiths, 1987)

The reinforcing effects of the stereoisomers have

not been previously assessed.

Notes:

In the baboon study, doses of 0.32, 1.0, and 3.2 mg/kg/inj MDMA engendered responding at a rate greater than that maintained by saline, but less than that maintained by 0.32 mg/kg/inj cocaine (Lamb and Griffiths, 1987).

In the rhesus monkey study however, doses of 0.03 and 0.1 mg/kg/inj supported response rates greater than those maintained by 0.03 or 0.05 mg/kg/inj cocaine in some subjects (Beardsley et al., 1986).
